The Atmosphere

Early Greeks considered "air" to be one of four elementary substances; along with earth, fire, and water. Air was viewed as a fundamental compound of the universe. Measurements such as temperature and pressure not only help us predict the weather, but also help us look at long-term changes in global climate. Nitrogen takes 78% of the Earth's atmosphere. Oxygen is 21% of the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide is very deadly to humans, animals, and plants.

Constant Components : Nitrogen (N2) 78.08%, Oxygen (O2) 20.95%, Argon (AR) 0.93%, Neon, Helium, Krypton 0.0001%

Variable Components : Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 0.038%, Water Vapor (H2O) 0.4%, Methane (CH4) Trace, Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Trace, Ozone (O3) Trace, Nitrogen Oxides (NO,NO2) Trace

Space Exploration

The Space Program
  • The space program is a program that let humans go in space
  • The space program started in 1958
  • NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration
  • The first human to orbit Earth was Yuri Gagarin, aboard Vostok 1
  • The first American in space, Alan Shepard, was aboard Freedom 7
  • The first American to orbit Earth was John Glenn, aboard Friendship 7
  • Between 1969 and 1972, the United States and the Soviet Union sent many unpiloted spacecrafts to explore the moon
  • In July 1969, three American astronauts circled the moon aboard Apollo 11
  • Once in orbit, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin entered a tiny spacecraft called Eagle
  • On July 20, the Eagle descended toward a flat area on the moon's surface called the Sea of Tranquility
  • The Eagle landed and said that they landed safely on the moon and the mission control in Houston, Texas cheered and whooped
  • "One small step for man, one giant leap for man kind." , stated Neil Armstrong
